LORELLE MEETS THE OBSOLETE (psych rock – MEX)
★★★
Lorelle Meets The Obsolete are Lorelle (real name Lorena Quintanilla) and The Obsolete (real name Alberto González). They are originally from Guadalajara but, after a stint in Mexico City, are now based in Ensenada, Baja California. Their music has been described as a ‘hot pot of shoegaze and Krautrock bubbled through a psych filter’ though they self-describe it just as ‘pattern music’. They have released three studio albums ‘On Welfare’ (Captcha Records, 2011), ‘Corruptible Faces’ (Captcha Records, 2013) and ‘Chambers’ (Captcha Records, Sonic Cathedral 2014) plus a selection of splits and 7”s.
Their album ‘Chambers’ came out on March 3rd 2014. It was recorded and mixed by CAVE’s Cooper Crain, mastered by Sonic Boom and released on iconic UK imprint Sonic Cathedral as well as Chicago indie Captcha Records (home to Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees and many more).
The album was praised everywhere from The Times to Q, Visions to Magic RPM, BBC Radio 6 to XFM, Crack to NME, who crassly but not inaccurately described the single ‘What’s Holding You?’ as sounding “like Stereolab getting wasted on Walter White’s finest blue crystal and pretending to be Queens Of The Stone Age”.
They accompanied the album’s release with well-received tours of the UK, Europe, the US and Mexico including performances at landmark festivals such as Liverpool Psych Fest, Austin Psych Fest, Incubate Festival (Tilburg), Moon Block Party (Pomona) and Festival Germinal del Bosque (Mexico City).
The duo play live as a five-piece using help from European and US musicians (most recently members of the New Candys and Disappearing People). Their live shows are intense and incendiary, with Lorena’s incredible guitar playing at the fore.
Now, alongside Captcha Records in the US, Sonic Cathedral is releasing ‘Balance’, their new album and fourth to date. The album mixed once again by Cooper Crain (CAVE, Bitchin’ Bajas) and mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control) is a much more introspective affair.
Henry Rollins, who has been a large proponent of the band has described the album as “just like its ancestors, it is yet another unique astonishing piece of work. The more you play it, the better it gets”.
